Let Each Of Us Please His Neighbor.

God commands us ( see Ecclesiastes 12:13, for example ) to look to the interests of others, with a view to pleasing him or her, leading to his or her edification.  Edification is an important concept in the Holy Bible.  We see this concept of edification or building up repeatedly in 1 Corinthians, chapter 14, for example.  In 1 Corinthians 14:5, it is written, " 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but x even more to prophesy.  The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up " ( Emphasis mine, R.E.W. ).  Again, in 1 Corinthians 14:12, it is written, " 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church " ( Emphasis mine, R.E.W. ).  And again, in 1 Corinthians 14:26, it is written, " 26 What then, brothers?  When you come together, each one has q a hymn, r a lesson, r a revelation, s a tongue, or t an interpretation.  uLet all things be done for building up " ( Emphasis mine, R.E.W. ).

In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, it is written, " 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. "  The apostle Paul ( see 1 Thessalonians 1:1 ) wrote ( see 1 Thessalonians 2:18; 3:5, for example ), here, of Christians, members of the church, encouraging one another and building one another up, toward the end of obtaining salvation, for in 1 Thessalonians 5:9, 10, it is written, " 9 For God has not destined us for j wrath, but k to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10l who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. "  Discouragement and despair could lead to apostasy ( see Exodus, chapter 13 ( especially verse 17, for example ); chapter 14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-5 ( especially verse 2, for example; New Testament; The [ expanded ] Bible™; Study The Bible While You Read, for example ) and Hebrews 6:4-8, for example ).

In 2 Corinthians 10:8, it is written ( please read this entire chapter to get the immediate context ), " 8 For even if I boast a little too much of y our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. "  Paul ( see 2 Corinthians 1:1 ) wrote ( see 9:1 and 10:1, for example ), here, that the authority given him, for example, by the Lord he used for building up the brethren, and not to destroy them.  It is a sin ( see Psalm 119:65-73, 142, and 151; John 17:1, 3, and 17; Romans 15:1-4 ( especially verse 4, for example ); 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16, 17; and 1 John 3:4 ( KJV, for example ), for example ) to be overly harsh concerning church discipline ( see 1 Corinthians, chapter 5 ( especially verses 4 and 5, for example ) and 2 Corinthians, chapter 2 ( especially verses 6 and 7, for example ), for example ).

The command of God, " u Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up, " in Romans 15:2, condemns selfish motives.  Selfishness is a sin ( see Philippians 2:3, for example ).  Please study the Holy Bible.
